Yeeeeeeeeeeee haw I got my keitai yesterday! holy shi`tballs batman is it ever hype! i got the newest model cuz of course it:s all or nothing with me, and it features a mirror, photos, 5 sec movies (both of which i can email to you), a dictionary, korean and mandarin phrase books (it actually speaks!!), a jap\eng translator, and i:ms ure it holds other goodies that i have yet to discover. i can check my hotmail on it. last night i sat out on my balcony with a nice slim marboro menthol... i mean.... milk and cookies. yes i sat outside with milk and cookies and read my email. honestly, mom an dad it was like you were right next to me. how cool it is that i can come home at the end of the day and read all about yours? the closeness that i feel is comforting. and insane at the same time!! please call me, my phone number is 080 5220 8574. i think you have to omit the first 0 when you call. and you have to dial 011 for an intl call plus 81 which is jap:s country code, then my number... my parents are still working on this one!. it:s best to call when it:s early morning for you because by then i:m done the day you are just beginning!
being lazy, and by lazy i mean efficient, the following is my journal entry from this past monday. consider yourself lucky to be privy to such intimate details of me- few people make it this deep!!
monday, 2am
is it ever cold out! i:m tired but i finished most of what i wanted to get done this weekend. today was awesome (awesome? um, am i a ninja turtle???) manager picked michelle and i up and we went to her friend:s sushi restaurant. they opened especially for us. we had an absolute feast of the godesses, by my (and prolly any fish lover:s) standards. i love teh way this pen scratches and sparkles. we had enormously enormous :) peices of sushi- thick slices fo raw fish on white rice with wasabi sandiwched in between- tuna, tuna belly, octopus, eel, shrimp, sweet shrimp, abalone, sea urchin that melts in your mouth, salmon roe, squid, trout... it was paradise. in fact, this whole day was paradise. i think i:ll call today Paradise Pmonday. then while i was satisfying my protein intake, the miso soup with chunks of tofu and mushrooms arrives. then the tempura- deep fried peices of shrimp, green peppers, pumpkin-really popular here- and fish in a crispy egg batter arrived. arrived... like it just pulls up in a car or something. but i bet if it did, it would be a Wonderful Small car! oh, but the feast is not done! we also had a scrumptious egg custard filled with mushrooms, egg, fish cakes (flo pink fish cakes. i:m goign to seriously regret all the red 40 i:ve been ingesting when i:m older and ridden with skitzophrenia!). to culminate the veritable tastebus extravaganze we shared iced coffee, a taste to which i:ve taken a liking to. instead of sugar, the japanese sweeten with gum syrup, a clear colourless liquid.
after that, which was a welcoming gift courtesy of manager:s mom (how many free welcome! meals can i possibly score?!) we drove to teh Shioyazaki lighthous. stunning! we worked off that sushi and then some as we climbed 73 m above sea level and then another 100 steps winding up to the top. from the apex i took in the panoramic view of the mountains and my beautiful pacific ocean, or, as manager says, :the sea:. the turquoise water below (the colour of eszter:s eyes) crashed against the rocks below and further along the coastline it lapped against the white sand beaches, gently lifting the surfers, swimmers, and fisherman. away from the coast it turned into 10 intense shades of squarmarine, sea foam green, and blus. teh blue of a clear evening sky. the blue of laurentian:s sky blue pencil crayon. the blue i:ve wanted to paint my room as i child. as i looked around i had a sudden moment of Whoa! i live in Japan! and it is PARADISE. my soul fluttered withinin. after we perused the small museum at the base of the lighthouse we headed to the shore and walked out on a long wharf. i closed my eyes, just listening to the waves breaking, tasting the salt on my lips. as i opened them and looked to the horizon i realized that on the other side of that vast blue expanse are andrea and corey, who are looking at the same natural beauty as i am only from the opposite side. how trippy is that?
we looked at some small stores nearby and took many pictures. there:s a monument to one of japan:s most famouse femal singer and the shops are practically shrines to her. she died a while ago from cancer, but is still so celebrated. that lil nugget brought me back to another reality and i felt a twinge of homesickness.
still digesting the sushi we headed to this hella big hyaku en (100 yen) store where i picked up mad goodies for the appt. how come i can never possessify the word appt? when michelle and i got home we went for an hour long walk by the river and past Tsubame, the neighbourhood Pachinko parlour..... so overall today was a supremely fantastic day! manager helped my pick out a cd of traditional japanese music on teh koto. it:s so good!! i lvoe insturmental cds. we talked about culture anbd she offered to ask her cousin, who plays the koto (flat guitar like thing that you pluck strings on) if she would play for me. she also graciously offered to let me try on one of her mother:s kimonos and take a picture! now how hype is that??? she also invited me again to her house for dinner, and to spa resort hawaiians. she:s so generous! i feel so special having this opprtunity to explor another way of life. and despite their nacholess predicament, i could definitely get used to this lifestyle! ic an:t wait to get a tutor and take the Japanese Proficiency Test in many months. this lang. barrier is starting to get annoying.
my lesson planning is picking up speed and i:m getting really excited at all the free time i:ll soon have to travel without worrying about some mondo worklaod to come back to. speaking of travel, follow up training is coming up in november, helf in the mountains near okayama at a conference centre. more people to meet and stories to share!!!
